Another technique
that maximizes space and yield, is the square foot technique. The idea
is to plant the maximum number of plants of the same variety in one
square foot (12x12”) based upon that variety’s needs for space. For
example, one could plant four lettuce plants in one square foot and,
barring natural disasters, have them all produce. A trellis system is
also a vital part, encouraging up-growth of vining and spreading
plants, such as tomatoes and cucumbers. This is another method
compatible with companion planting.
