Organic Pesticides

In organic growing, it is ideal to exhaust all other methods of pest control before turning to these materials. There are a number of pesticides, which are used largely as insecticides or fungicides, that fit into government-determined organic standards for farmers and for gardeners. These include sulfur, copper, oil, neem, diatomaceous earth, Bt (bacillus thuringiensis), and pyrethrins.

How these differ from pesticides used in conventional growing is that these organic pesticides come from natural sources – plants or animals. While these pesticides can be toxic in copious amounts, they typically have a narrow, rather than general, target range and are less persistent than synthetic pesticides. (Remember: if using organic pesticides, they are still pesticides and should be used only as directed on the label.)
