There's a joke that's all too true in many doctoral
programs. "In the doctoral program, students learn more and more
about less and less until they know everything about nothing."
That's not Ball State's approach. Ball State students
study broadly in their chosen field so they are prepared to teach
comprehensive introductory courses in their major field and upper
division, undergraduate courses in their sub-discipline (e.g., analytical
chemistry) as well as courses outside of their core discipline.
(For example, in a small college a physics faculty member may teach
a mathematics course or an interdisciplinary science course.)
