Appointed in 2000, Blaine A. Brownell, Ph.D., is the 12th president of Ball State University. 

Prior to coming to Ball State, he was the executive director of the Center for International Programs and Services at the University of Memphis.

He is a former provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of history at the University of North Texas.

He began his teaching career at Purdue University as an assistant professor of history and American studies from 1969 to 1974. He began his administrative career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as chair of the Department of Urban Studies, dean of the Graduate School, and dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

He graduated cum laude with a B.A. in American civilization from Washington and Lee University.  He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in U.S. history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

He was a senior research fellow at the Institute of Southern History at Johns Hopkins University.
