or the Phil and the other men of the Fourth Division, the war in the Pacific started with the Battle for Roi-Namur in the Kwajalein Atoll on February 1, 1944 and lasted for the next thirteen months, coming to an end March 16, 1945 with the famous flag raising on Mount Surabachi on the island of Iwo Jima.  The battles waged in the Pacific were important
ones, they were the stepping stones that would lead the United States to Japan and an end to the war.  More information regarding the battles and their significance can be found using the Pacific map below.

Each of the four islands - Roi-Namur, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Maui - is a link to individual sections of the Essay Gallery and focus on the specific events Phil, Mr. Ralston, Garcia and others participated in.  While Maui was not a battle site, it was home to the Marines throughout the course of the war in the Pacific.  To read about each, simply click on the island of interest and you will be directed to that section of the gallery.  Thank you and enjoy your visit.
