A
University Singers Tradition…
“A very special “University Singers Look is an important part
of our Show both onstage and offstage. For forty years we’ve
been recognized at home and round the work for our fresh,
young, contemporary, and friendly personality and appearance.”
--The University Singers Way
What is Travel Attire?
Travel Attire is worn every time we come together as The Ball State University Singers. You wear Travel Attire from the call time to the release time of a performance (except during the show when we are in costume). Travel Attire is designed so that we look professional, yet glamorous. It is also designed so that if something were to happen to our costumes, we can still perform in our Travel Attire.
What does Travel Attire consist of?
Everyone will receive a nametag and a pin that is to be worn with Travel Attire at all times. (You pay to replace these items, so don't lose them!)
Men:
Your outfit should consist of a pair of Old Navy Regular Fit plain front Khaki’s in the khaki color*; a navy blazer (a nice one from Goodwill is fine); an oxford style dress shirt of any color that compliments the navy and khaki; a nice tie that again compliments the outfit; and dress shoes (you can wear Docs as long as they are nice, but no boots).
Jewelry: watches are fine, and only one ring on each hand.
Your face is also a part of Travel Attire; it must be clean-shaven no more than three hours before a call time. (“Five o’clock” shadows are never permitted). Sideburns should be no longer than the middle of the ear. If you wish to wear other facial hair, you must negotiate with the Director, who will likely encourage you otherwise!
If you wear earrings, you must limit yourself to one stud in each ear, with no hoops. No other piercings can be visible.
Women:
The main key to your Travel Attire is that you look professional. Your outfit should move well. It should not be tight, but not look frumpy. Be very careful with trendy clothing; it tends to be too short, too tight, and immodest. Your options include a dress, skirt with a blouse (no cleavage showing!), or a pants suit (with a blazer jacket). The length of your shirt or dress MUST BE TO YOUR KNEES, no shorter! (This includes the skirts that are slit on the side up-to-there). Remember, you need to be able to dance FULL OUT in your outfit; for this reason, a fuller skirt is always the better choice. Showing any amount of cleavage is never appropriate. Furthermore, cap sleeves are the minimal sleeve length acceptable. When it comes to a pants suit, the pants should not be too tight and the blazer should match the pants accordingly.
Shoes are also important. You will want to purchase comfortable shoes that are easy to dance in. You should not wear skinny-three-inch heels or big clunky shoes that are difficult to dance in. NO open-toed shoes! (This includes peep-toed shoes as well). Appropriately dressy flats are fine, although a nice pair of neutral or black pumps is usually the best choice.
Last, hair and makeup: Appropriate Travel Attire hair is curled and styled away from the face in a barrette, headband, etc. so that your face can be seen. Falls may be worn if we are wearing them in the performance that day.
Full makeup should be done and ready to go as well, but it does not have to be as thick as it would for the actual performance on stage.
***On certain days the cast is required to wear their black University Singers polo and khakis. The black polo will be purchased through the Director at the beginning of the year and the khakis should be purchased on your own. The gentlemen will wear the same khaki pants that they wear with their travel attire. The ladies will need to purchase a pair of Old Navy Regular Khakis.* Everyone should wear comfortable close-toed shoes that match the outfit accordingly. The rest follows the regular travel attire guidelines!
Everyone: Please understand that it is all right to just have one Travel Attire outfit. You do not need to wear a different outfit to each performance. If you think that an outfit is on the borderline, or you have doubts, don’t wear it. You might not want to wear any jewelry of great value because you must take it off for the show, although engagement rings or wedding bands are fine. Please be prepared to bring your Travel Attire outfit in at the beginning of the year. We will be checking it to avoid sending you home on the day of a show for wearing the wrong pants, your skirt being too short/tight, etc. If you have any questions, let the Wardrobe Manager know. Also note chapter four in The University Singers Way, which discusses the “University Singers Look.”
*Khaki pants (you WILL need these for the first weekend when we perform at State Fair):
There are two colors a darker and a lighter khaki...get the lighter of the two colors it goes with the ladies better but the item number matches the lighter pair anyway so there should not be any confusion!
