Frank McNamara

What would you do if you reached into your wallet to pay for a business dinner and had no money? "Use a charge card," you may say. What if there was no such thing? That's what happened to Frank McNamara, who found himself penniless when presented with the check for an expensive meal. He decided to devise a way to insure that it would not happen again, to him or others.

In 1950, McNamara introduced the Diner's Club Charge Card. The first directory of accepted restaurants was the size of a wallet calendar. From this small beginning, the charge card industry (and later the credit card industry) changed the way people do business forever.
