Present Yourself through a Professional Portfolio
Everyone dreams of surviving the interview and landing the job, right? But many people fail to market themselves to the best of their abilities. You can avoid this situation by developing a portfolio to highlight accomplishments and achievements that make you an outstanding candidate for the job.
What exactly is a portfolio? Consider it an elaboration on your résumé. It represents a combination of your past experiences, training, and education. The materials included in a portfolio can be awards, certificates, letters of recommendation, writing samples, transcripts, your résumé, and other documents that illustrate your accomplishments. For example, if you have a degree in education, make sure to include your teaching license. If you’re architecture major, include blueprints or layouts you’ve designed. Consider including photographs of your projects. Use samples of your best work.
How should you organize a portfolio? Put each item in a clear page protector. Use a leather or simulated leather binder, preferably one that zips. Make sure all your materials are secure and protected. Using tabs or dividers can help as an organizational tool. Provide a table of contents or description statement for each piece in the portfolio. It is usually best to start with academic experience and achievements. Follow that with additional skills and training. In the last section of your portfolio, include any documents for your field that may be required, such as certifications, licenses, or letters of recommendation.
Use your portfolio during the interview to support your examples of your experience and skills. If the interviewer asks for copies of any of your materials, offer to send them if you don’t have extra copies with you. Make sure each item you give the employer has your name and contact information on it.
With so many educated and experienced candidates, a good interview isn’t always enough to land your desired job. By organizing yourself and presenting your accomplishments in a clear and focused manner, you will have an advantage that will make you stand out from the rest.
