Etiquette Dinner
October 15, 22 or 23
Don't know a fork from a faux pas? If you have registered for this date, attend the Professional Etiquette Dinner October 15 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Center. This program will be an opportunity for you to learn what it takes to make a great first impression and how to navigate through a formal dinner with style. During the meal, you will learn the basics of proper dining from use of the napkin, silverware, and glassware to what to do at the conclusion of the meal. During the four-course meal, Career Center staff members will guide you through the fine-dining experience. The meal will follow a networking session in which participants get to practice juggling hors d'oeuvres and punch while greeting people and carrying on conversation.

The October 15 etiquette dinner is already full. If you have not already done so please register for either the October 22 or 23 dinner. E-mail Emily Rosendall at emrosendall@bsu.edu or call 285-2430 by October 8!

From Group to Team: The Process of Building and Leading Teams
Saturday, October 6 (Park Hall, Multipurpose Room), 9 a.m. – noon
Nearly everyone has worked in both group and team environments. Most people would say that they got more done, had more fun, felt less stress, and produced better work when they were on a team than when they worked alone. In this fast-paced, interactive session we will explore what it takes to help a group of people become a team. As a participant, you will gain insights on:

  • The interactions between people that either help or hinder team formation
  • The process that all high performing teams go through before they achieve success
  • Leadership and communication principles that will help you help your team

Speaker: Guy Harris
Guy Harris is a leadership and business development coach, consultant, trainer, and speaker. His experience includes service as a submarine officer in the U.S. Navy, technical management in the chemical industry, and, most recently, as a human behavioral specialist.

Guy draws on more than twenty years of combined professional and military experience to help business owners, organizational leaders, and team members improve both personal and business performance.

He works with organizations across the United States and Canada as a speaker, consultant, coach, and trainer. As the owner of Principle Driven Consulting, he has helped thousands of people become better at setting and achieving goals, communicating more effectively, and leading their organizations in more positive and productive ways.

President’s Reception
Wednesday, November 7 (Bracken House), 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Camp Adventure a Success!

Thank you to all the Business Fellows and faculty mentors who attended the team building event on September 22. The activities were great and gave each team an opportunity to work together and map out plans of action for each task. Everyone is looking forward to seeing the progress of your teams throughout the year. Thanks to all of you for your interest and commitment to Business Fellows. Because of you, we are off to a good start!

Reminder!
You should have already received this month’s monthly absence report. Please remember to sign and return it to Emily Rosendall by October 12th.

In Construction Zone, you'll find articles that will help you build your professional skills. These articles will usually relate to the topics you will be learning about through the Professional Development Workshops.

Servant Mentality Key to Effective Leadership
True leaders lead before they realize they have followers. This idea supports the popular trend of servant leadership. As a servant leader an individual is not interested in the power or monetary benefits that come from leading. Rather, she or he is motivated by the growth or personal goals that they help their followers achieve. A servant leader has a calling, listens, shows empathy, heals, is aware, is persuasive, conceptualizes, has foresight, demonstrates stewardship, grows continuously, and builds community. These characteristics may be inherent, but they can also be developed through a commitment to be the type of leader who makes a positive difference on people.

Take a L-I-G-H-T-E-R Approach to Teamwork
At the September 22 Camp Adventure event, your facilitators talked about the importance of teamwork with your Business Fellows project and with any professional endeavor. Learn more in this article about the L-I-G-H-T-E-R concept of teamwork and how working well with others is essential for both rookies and seasoned professionals.

Diversity Imperative to Creative Work Environments
Diversity is essential to fostering a truly unique perspective and a creative work environment. Accepting and applauding the talents, skills, backgrounds, and opinions of others can be a challenge, however. Learn more in this article about how celebrating diversity can enhance any team or work environment.

Career Roadmap

As a Business Fellow you may have started to think a little more seriously about your future, and in this quest for what lies ahead you may have come across some obstacles. We have answers! The Career Center realizes that searching for a job isn’t easy and that along the way many questions arise about résumés, cover letters, interviews, internships, and the job search in general. That is why we have set aside time to help students with their career-related questions. The Career Center provides multiple opportunities for students to get their questions answered. Drop-in advising is available and is held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. If drop-in does not meet your needs, call 285-2430 and make an appointment to meet with your Career Center advisor and get your questions answered. If you are looking for more resources related to careers, internships, or graduate schools, stop by the Career and Experiential Learning Lab in Lucina Hall 235, open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
