Professional Development Workshop

The last professional development workshop of the semester will be held on Tuesday April 3, 2007, at the Ball State University Alumni Center, meeting room 2. The topic will be conflict management, presented by Alicia Kelly from Wishard Health Services.

Professional Etiquette

Job interviews come in many forms and variations from lunch or dinner interviews to telephone interviews. Just because you are meeting a potential employer over a meal or talking to one over the phone does not mean you need to leave your professional persona at home. Here are some helpful resources adapted from the Career Center to help you prepare for these kinds of interviews. For more information on dining etiquette please visit http://www.bsu.edu/students/careers/students/interviewing/dining/ and also attend the Professional Etiquette dinner on Thursday, March 29, 2007, at the Ball State University Alumni Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per student. Telephone Etiquette

  • Be prepared.
  • Answer promptly.
  • Put a smile in your voice!
  • Identify yourself.
  • Use good speech habits.
  • Respect others’ time.
  • Leave messages when necessary with a person or with a machine.
  • Record a professional message on your machine.
  • Return calls promptly.

Interviewing

After attending the job fair, many of you might be wondering what happens next? Well, the Career Center still has plenty of opportunities for you to meet with potential employers. Spring On-Campus Interviewing is in progress until Friday, March 30, 2007, help you connect with employers conducting interviews for positions in management, marketing, sales, accounting, computer science/technology, technology, actuarial science, and teaching. Some employers recruit students with any major.

The  Career Center uses Cardinal Career Link to schedule and manage on-campus interviews. Cardinal Career Link is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You can access Cardinal Career Link by going to http://www.bsu.edu/students/careers/students/viewjobs/.

Here are some tips from jobweb.com to help you prepare for interviews:

  • Arrive on time.
  • Introduce yourself in a courteous manner.
  • Research the company before your interview.
  • Have a firm handshake.
  • Listen.
  • Use body language to show interest.
  • Smile, nod, and give nonverbal feedback to the interviewer.
  • Ask about the next step in the process.
  • Thank the interviewer.
  • Write a thank-you letter to anyone you have spoken to.
