Job Search Basics
Regardless of whether you are just beginning your job search or are well into the process, here are a few tips on important things to keep in mind.

Visit the Career Center
From the Career Center you can receive personalized career guidance, help with job-search documents such as résumés and cover letters, tips for networking and interviewing and information about the job-search process.

Look at Your Experience
Reflect on your internship, volunteer, work, organization, and group membership experience. If you have limited experience, it is time to consider joining professional organizations or engaging in volunteer activities that will help you build your leadership, organization, and communication skills.

Write a Great Résumé
Your résumé is a marketing tool to sell your skills and abilities, and it is a quick way to tell an employer why he or she should hire you. According to Grad Magazine, it is estimated that prospective employers make a decision on whether to interview a candidate in less than 30 seconds based on the information on the person’s résumé. You should start by listing all your accomplishments and experiences in three main categories; education, work and internship, and other activities. For more information on résumé writing you can refer to the Career Center Web site at www.bsu.edu/students/careers/documents/resumes/ or stop by for drop-in advising: 1-3 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and 10 a.m.-noon Thursday and Friday.

Research
Once you have decided on a career path, its time to start searching for openings. Begin by making a list of what you want from a job. Think about locations, work hours, work setting, type of company and also look at the benefits that job has to offer. If during your research you find that your college major and career objectives do not match, don’t panic; consider taking additional classes or certifications that might add to your experiences and then expand your job search.

Work on Your Professional Persona
Based on the research you do on an industry if it requires being professional then you will have to work on becoming a professional. Prospective employers appreciate candidates who avoid extremes in dress and appearance. The Career Center offers professional etiquette dinners that cover topics such as professional dress and dining etiquette.

Career Roadmap

Preparing for a Job Fair
A job fair is a great opportunity to meet with numerous employers at one site on one day to discuss career and internship positions. Cardinal Job Fair is scheduled for February 28, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Worthen Arena. With more than 100 employers coming on campus to discuss full-time, part-time off-campus, and internship opportunities, many of you might be wondering how you are going to approach employers, what are you going to wear or even how are you going to present yourself to potential employers. Therefore it is essential for you to establish connections with recruiters in ways that leave a lasting impression.

Dress appropriately for a professional interview. This can affect your consideration as a candidate for employment.

Bring an abundance of résumés. Employers will have little chance of reassessing your qualities without some sort of reminder.

Bring a folder, paper, and pens. It is important to look organized and prepared, so bring materials to take notes and to hold literature you receive from employers.

Map out a plan. Use time effectively by reading the list of participating organizations and deciding which ones to visit and the order in which to meet with them.

Approach a job fair with an open mind. Be willing to visit with some unfamiliar organizations and with employers from various industries since they may have special employment needs.

Prepare an introduction. Start with a firm handshake and a smile, so as to exude confidence and enthusiasm. Be ready to succinctly discuss your career goals, unique qualifications, work experiences, internships, extracurricular activities, computer skills, etc. Have a set of questions ready to ask employers as well, but do not inquire about salary.

Collect business cards and company brochures.

Send follow-up letters in an expeditious manner. Mailing thank-you letters and additional resumes represents interest in opportunities and keeps the lines of communication open.
