Between Tradition and Dissent
Working with and learning from ignored communities
Jesse Miller
2008 | Master of Architecture
The realization that architecture is not doing enough to address the problem of ignored communities, along with critically pondering what opportunities and lessons architectural education has not provided results in a new approach to an unfamiliar topic. Moving away from a well-known studio desk and a familiar, well-used building to study in another country and in a new university with a small program that is addressing social problems within its community becomes part of the process. This project began as an opened-ended exploration into what can be done with and what can be learned from ignored communities. It has resulted in three projects that range from large housing developments to traditional rural construction to creative solutions for inadequate housing.
