Tornado Resistant Housing
Designing to survive a tornado

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website, “Tornadoes cause an average of 70 fatalities and 1,500 injuries in the U.S. each year.” While this fact is astounding, it takes living in an area where severe weather is common to understand that tornadoes and severe weather can cause a great deal of damage, even if they do not always result in injury or death. Tornadoes can occur randomly in the United States based solely on the weather patterns, especially in the Central United States. In view of the fact that tornadoes cause so much damage and even fatalities, this indicates that a new architectural design of housing would be beneficial. Can a new architecture building style be developed that is resistant to tornadoes, yet still provide the desired sustainability and comfort? Moreover, what characteristics will distinguish this new style?
