| Collegiate campuses across the nation have
been sustaining a changing and evolving student body. New
generations of students entering the college scene bring with
them a life-style most higher academic institutions find
difficult to accommodate. On-campus student housing options are
outdated with amenities and lack in appeal, they do not cater to
students needs and thus, schools discover their on-campus
student retention rate declining over the academic years.
Adversely, the private sector has capitalized on this trend and
thus, their business endeavors have only added to the problem:
attracting students to off-campus housing leaving campus empty.
This project explores the building typology of on-campus student
housing at Ball State University and the problems or dilemmas
found within. It is an attempt, a hypothetical proposal for to
attract students back to the collegiate scene. It explores the
idea of “place” and “community” through Phenomenology to
reinforce and enhance a housing development which is attractive
and accommodating to all students. |
