The first Regional Center Plan forum was designed to integrate the
Central Indiana Life Sciences Initiative with the Regional Center
Plan. The Life Sciences Initiative is an initiative of Mayor Bart
Peterson to market and develop the economic future of the city and
region. A major physical component of the initiative is a life
sciences district Downtown to build off of the presence of existing
research and health industry leaders like IUPUI, IU Medical School,
Clarian Health, and Eli Lilly and Company. Because of the potentially
profound impact on all aspects of Downtown life, the Regional Center
Plan sponsored a public forum to ensure all plan committees and the
greater public had an opportunity to integrate Life Science plans into
their work. The forum, held March 18, 2003 in the Artsgarden, drew
about 150 people. At the forum, Life Science Initiative planners
presented their ideas for the Northwest Quadrant of Downtown.
