Rationale
I have chosen my similarities quiz as my artifact for Sociology 421, because it shows my knowledge of similarities between groups of people that are often times overlooked, the stigmas and prejudices that are associated with certain groups of people when similarities are overlooked, and how these stigmas and prejudices affect people’s lives. To gain more knowledge on this subject, I paid attention in class and read the book “Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class” by Joseph Healy. I have decided to pair this artifact with Intasc #7 because with this new found knowledge of stigmas and prejudices, I can create instruction that I am knowledgeable in and that will apply to my students, their community, and curriculum goals. By creating this artifact, I learned how similar people of different races, backgrounds, gender, etc are. For example, heterosexual and homosexual people are often times stigmatized as completely different, but other than their sexual preference it was easy to find similarities between the two. This quiz also helped me to see that in American society we let our differences define us, but if we would let our similarities define us, we would find that we have a lot more in common with people than what we thought. As a teacher, I look at this artifact and think it is a great teaching tool that I can use within my classroom to help students begin to break down stigmas and prejudices they have about certain people. This artifact shows that I have gained a substantial amount of knowledge about people groups, stigmas, and prejudices and will be able to use that to instruct my students in a way that will influence them, their community, and the effect the curriculum has on their lives. |
