Questions: What do you think of when you think of a spiritual experience?
                 What type of people have spiritual experiences?

Definition of ecstatic religious experience- pg. 70

2 ways of seeing ecstasy:
     A.  Experiential-Expressive View
          1.  experience important to understanding religion
          2.  having an inner understanding
          3.  manifestation of the sacred or ultimate power
          4.  religion as the outward manifestation of inner experiences

          * weakness: to subjective or mental and makes religious traditions look limited

    B.  Cultural-Linguistic View
          1.  sees culture as construction of reality and the living of life with symbols (Read pg. 73)
          2.  religion is not the outward expression of inner experiences
                    a.   religion that facilitates or evokes certain inner experiences
                    b.   those more involved in religion have more ecstatic experiences
