Rationale
I have decided to include a paper that asked questions over the movie Bowling for Columbine as one of my artifacts, because it shows my understanding of the movie and how it applies to the deviant act of physical violence that I learned about in Sociology 241. I have also included this paper as an artifact, because it shows my ability to apply what I have learned from class and from the class text book, Deviant Behavior to answering the questions asked, about the movie. This artifact also shows my knowledge of the deviant act of physical violence and its presence in the American culture. When teaching sociology, I will need to know the central concepts of my discipline, as noted in Intasc Principle #1, and this artifact show that I know the content of physical violence and deviance. By completing this artifact, I have learned my strengths in retaining the knowledge of deviance, but also I have learned how an assignment like the one I’m using as my artifact, will be helpful to me as a teacher, in creating a classroom in which students will be encouraged to actively inquire knowledge and interact. By allowing my students to watch a movie over a subject they are learning, having them answer questions according to the movie, and asking them to talk about their answers in class, I will be encouraging them to actively engage in the subject and communicate within the classroom. Intasc principle #6 emphasizes the use of “media communication techniques to foster active inquiry and interaction within the classroom,” which I have learned through preparing this artifact that I would like to use within my classroom because it was effective in my learning of deviance. This artifact shows that I have grasped the subject of sociology, more specifically, deviance, and have considered how I can use the artifact and the subject within my own classroom. |
