Rationale

I chose the paper which covered the comparison of the movie and the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, because it shows my ability to compare two sources and see how they parallel each other in a simplified form. This paper also shows my familiarity with an author’s work, who was writing during a time period (The Harlem Renaissance) that I will be expected to know about and be able to teach my future students. I felt like this paper was important to include in my portfolio because it’s unlike any other paper I’ve written in the sense that it’s short and to the point. My teacher for History 202, Professor David Ulbrich, wanted this paper to be a brief comparison of the movie and the book, so I chose to compare a few events and subjects that were important in establishing the purpose and meaning of the story.
I learned a lot about Zora Neale Hurston and her impact on many people, especially women, through reading the book, “America Between the Wars, 1920-1945,” which was a required reading for History 202. This book also supplied me with many important aspects of her book Their Eyes Were Watching God that would help me when comparing it to the movie. By using the required reading for History 202 and the movie, I was able to see how comparing and simplifying Hurston’s book to the movie, would help me to see what parts of her story were the most important aspects and main points she wanted people to hear and see.
This artifact pairs with Intasc Principle #1 because it shows my knowledge of the subject of history and content I will someday be teaching, specifically my knowledge of a person, Zora Neale Hurston, whose works of literature inspired many during the Harlem Renaissance. Not only does this artifact show my grasp of the content, but also my ability to grasp the main points of Hurston’s story and how they were displayed in another medium.
