Rationale
I decided to include this critical thinking exercise from Sociology 100 as one of my artifacts, because it shows my understanding of the concept of impression management and how I can apply this to my everyday life and teaching career, and shows my ability to use my imagination to create a realistic setting I might someday face in the process of becoming a teacher. To help myself learn more about impression management, beside what I learned during lectures, I read the book Sociology Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life. I feel that this exercise was also important to include in my portfolio, because not only will impression management be a concept I will someday be teaching my sociology students, but it will also be a concept I will use when applying for a job in the teaching field. This artifact applies very well to Intasc principle #1 in that from a teaching standpoint, I “understand the central concepts” of the subject of sociology in which I will be teaching, which is shown in this artifact, through my apparent understanding and application of the concept of impression management. From this artifact I learned that impression management is a concept I will not only be teaching but also a concept that I will be using when interviewing for a teaching position. By imagining a setting such as, interviewing for a teaching position, I was able to visualize and, in a sense prepare myself, to think about what qualities of myself I will want to highlight when applying for a real teaching job. This exercise allowed me to see how impression management plays a huge role in how people view me and encouraged me to consider upon entering the teaching field, what impressions I want to leave on my students and co-workers. |
