Much of the presentation was based upon the new capabilities added to http://www.bsu.edu/library and plans for the future.  They recommend we watch the "What's New" page of the library web site to get information on new capabilities as they are added.  Below you will find a summary.  FYI, here is the power point presentation.

Melissa Muth

The library has been developing a number of "Information Literacy" online tutorials for students.  Two major projects have been developed: One for the Nursing Department that has integrated library research skills across-the-curriculum and one for the English Department to help students in Freshmen English courses learn about the online catalog, periodical indexes, search strategy and evaluating information.

The instructional librarians are interested in working with other departments.  The goal is to develop similar projects that can be customized for a particular course or department.

A number of new services have been developed for faculty including:

email a reference librarian (get a quick answer to a question)

set up consultation meeting with reference librarian

an online suggestions box

book suggestions outside one's subject area

online resource guides on Business, Univercity, and Life on the Color Line

Tomorrow the library is planning:

more online full-text information  on electronic databases

develop a site for answers to questions frequently asked in the library

more electronic databases

continued rapid growth of online government publications

Hilde Calvert

User Services now permits

viewing of a personal list of materials that are checked out, including due dates

recalling and renewing materials online,

signing-up to receive online notices of upcoming due dates of checked-out materials,

viewing electronic reserves,

routing interlibrary loan requests placed electronically from the FirstSearch databases directly to other institutions (speeding up the process)

In the future,

for more convenience, recalling materials will be added directly to WebCat,

Interlibrary loans will be made direct to other institutions (speeding up the process),

online form will be available for requesting information from remote storage,

online form for placing materials on reserve, and

online form for reserving a study room

Michael Jerrell

WebCat has been adapted to provide many services for BSU

In the future:

improve user friendliness of WebCat

have more access to digital images, video, and audio (e.g., Netlibrary and Hyperion)

Several issues were raised by those in attendance:

Adding a list server so that notifications could go out to make BSU community members (who are interested) aware of new capabilities as they become available

Improving the distribution of music CDs for use in courses.  Almost all other holdings in the library can be checked out for use in classes, but music CDs cannot be.
