Summary of Ron Kaitchuck's presentation:

A Student Response System
 |
has been installed in one classroom where physics and
astronomy classes are taught. |
 |
The room has 103 hard wired keypads. |
 |
Each keypad has a number pad, letters A-E, yes-no, and clear
keys as well as a small LCD screen. |
 |
The instructor's computer can view visual summaries of
student's keypresses and the summaries can be displayed on the VIS
system. |
 |
There are three modes: |
-
Open forum - students'
responses are anonymous. Good mode for checking student
understanding.
-
Group-Paced testing -
Questions displayed in the front and all students respond to a question
before going on to the next. Works well for short quizzes.
-
Self-Paced testing - Students
first complete tests on paper, then enter answers. If only a small number
of test forms, feedback can be provided, but if the number of forms is
large then feedback can not be given.
Pros -
 |
easy to use, |
 |
students generally like it, and |
 |
provides some valuable interaction in the classroom |
Cons -
 |
high maintenance, |
 |
not 100% reliable which reduces its effectiveness for
self-paced testing |
