Before You Read
 Before you begin reading Abuela's Weave, complete the following activities:

  • In this story, a young girl learns about her family heritage and traditions from her grandmother. Would you help us learn more about cultural traditions by sharing some traditions that have been in your family from one generation to the next? Visit the following site, print out the sheet and complete the activity!
  • In this story there are some Spanish words that you may not know. Take some time to use this special dictionary to find out what they mean!

While You Read
Begin by looking through all the illustrations in the book. Predict what you think will happen in the story according to the pictures. Record your predictions on the table. While you read, stop occasionally to confirm and update the prediction table. If your original prediction was incorrect, write what actually happened.

After You Read
After you have completed Abuela's Weave, work on one of the following activities...

  • Pretend that you are the main character, Esperanza. Write an e-mail letter to your e-pal describing your experiences, feelings and reactions of your day at the market.
  • Use the construction paper strips provided to add to our class weave! Write on your strip the names of the members of your family and at least one cool characteristic. Be prepared to share with the class tomorrow and add to the loom in the back of the classroom.
