Before You Read

At least two activities are included. Each activity serves to activate background knowledge, build background knowledge, help students make predictions, set purposes, and/or generate prereading questions regarding the major concepts and themes in the story.  Both activities utilize Internet resources.        

While You Read

An activity is included which facilitates moving thoughtfully and meaningfully through the reading of the book.        

After You Read

At least two response activities are included that help the student with comprehension or clarification of the story. The activities take the child more thoughtfully back to the book and are tied integrally to the major concepts and themes of the book such that they could not be done well by the student unless she/he has read the book.   Both activities utilize Internet resources.        

Beyond What You Read

At least two activities are included that extend the book in some way. These activities are logically related to the major themes, subject, and content of the book.  Both activities utilize Internet resources.        

About What You Read

A rubric is included to evaluate the student’s work on the lesson activities. The rubric evaluates both the content and form of the meaning the student has made of the story.        

Mechanics

All spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure is accurate.        

Site Appropriateness

The linked web sites are appropriate for the activity, the content of the book, and the age of the child who is likely to complete the lesson.        

Ease of Movement & Format

All links work and lead the student to the pertinent information efficiently. The colors, graphics, and sound enhance the appeal of the lesson.        

Quiz/Game

A motivating and engaging game, quiz, or other on-line activity is included.
