Mud Flap

Caution: While cleaning my bike I noticed that the flap had been rubbing the cowling. When I installed it there seemed to and still seems to be plenty of clearance when idle through the full range of the handle bars. Evidently under some conditions I am getting some interference. You should be aware of this before doing this or any other flap addition.

Update: I think I found out why the mud flap was rubbing the cowling, but have not had an opportunity to verify it. It seems that the bolts that were used to attach the chrome extension did not tighten down due to a ferrule at the top. When I grab the chrome extension I can rotate it about the screw. I have changed out these bolts and think all will be well in the future.

I have the Honda Fender Extension. The problem is that is is really an ornament and not an extension. It only extends about 1" below the fender. I got tired of cleaning the cowling and noticed that the cowling was taking a beating from rocks and debris, so I decided to add a mud flap. Sounded kind of ugly, but in the end it is hardly noticeable.

Installation Instructions

  1. Remove the fender extension. There is bolt (5mm Allen Wrench) on each side. There is special retainer nut on the back side, be careful not to loose it. If the fender extension does not come off easily after removing the two bolts and retainer nuts, it may be attached with double faced tape. If this is the case, it may be easier to install the mud flap with the fender extension attached to the bike.

  2. Start from the bottom and one edge of one of the splash guards and using a razor knife cut the splash guard to 6" high x 5-3/4" wide. Note, the bottom edges are rounded. You were able to use one of the original round edges on the bottom. You will have to mark the radius (bottom of a spray can is the right size) and cut the other radius with the razor knife.

  3. The fender extension has two raised ridges. You will have to cut a vertical slot about 1/8" wide and 1" high to clear the ridges so that the splash guard will mount flush with the extension. (Note: you may also be able to do this to the fender without using the extension.)

  4. Use alcohol to clean the inside of the fender extension up at least 1" and apply strips of the molding tape. I used two strips of 1/2" tape, allowing 1" of the splash guard to be adhered to the fender extension.

  5. Use alcohol to clean the smooth side of the splash guard down at least 1" from the top.

  6. Locate the smooth side of the splash guard against the fender extension (the fiberglass reinforced side will be toward the tire) and hold in place for a few seconds until secure.

  7. Reinstall the fender extension. Like the dealer, I did not use the original tape to mount the fender extension to the fender. (see update above. I think this is why the extension rotated and allow the mud flap to rub the cowling)
